George @ High RocksThe Barron River Challenge known as the BRC 50 – has been run since 2011. This event was designed to fit onto the back of the Gregory River Canoe Marathon, which is held on the first weekend of May. In the search of consistent water levels we have placed our race at the end of May.

The three races (BRC20, BRC 30 and BRC50) have classes for men, women, youth, kayak, Canadian and teams. On Saturday paddlers compete in the 20km BRC20 from Mareeba to Bilwon or the first leg of the BRC50 which is the BRC20 course. A fresh relay ‘Teams of 4’ category promises to see many new faces on day 1 of our Challenge. On Sunday the premier event continues from Bilwon to Kuranda, a distance of 30km (BRC50). With these competitors come support crew and spectators from all over Australia, who often spend extra time and money in our region as tourists.

The Barron River Challenge is advertised Australia-wide and receives local media coverage, both prior to the date and during the race weekend. Our small, but dedicated Tinaroo Canoe Club committee is seeking support from local businesses to help make the BRC20, BRC30 and BRC50 significant sporting events in our district.

Tinaroo Canoe Club (TCC) is a community minded, not-for-profit, incorporated club. Each year in preparation for the event, TCC cleans and maintains the river through the removal of flood debris and rubbish to make it a safe environment for the whole community.

The Tinaroo Canoe Club would like to take this opportunity to thank its sponsors for without their generous support, this event may not be possible.
