The Barron River Challenge – known as the BRC 50 – will have its 10th anniversary paddle in 2021 (COVID cancelled in 2020) and has been going from strength to strength since its inception in 2011. This event, designed to fit onto the back of the Gregory River Canoe Marathon, is held on the last weekend in May or on the first weekend of June and has become an annual calendar event in the canoeing community. The challenge is scheduled for 29/30th May in 2021.
The Three races (BRC20, BRC30 and BRC50) have classes for men, women, children, kayak, Canadian and teams. On Saturday paddlers compete in the 20km BRC20 from Mareeba to Bilwon or the first leg of the BRC50 which is the BRC20 course. On Sunday the premier event continues from Bilwon to Kuranda, a distance of 30km (BRC30/BRC50). BRC50H competitors will have a different craft for the second day.
